I’m a young Ojibwe artist from Bahweting (home of the rapids) also known as Sault Ste. Marie. I love exploring my culture through artwork including beadwork, sewing, painting and more. I am currently starting my first year of college at a local Native American community college. In my free time I enjoy traveling the powwow trail throughout the states. Creating art has always been a relaxing way to cultivate and express my ideas of self. I believe empowering Indigenous youth to express themselves through artwork is important for our communities.

In Ojibwe, the word for moon is “Nokomis.” Nokomis has a double-meaning in my language as it also refers to “grandmother.” Both meanings coincide together in tradition as we believe the moon is the grandmother spirit looking upon us, always there to guide. In my art piece, I wanted to represent grandmother spirit looking upon us in the traditional Ojibwe art style consisting of line work, flat colors and Ojibwe florals. In using the traditional format, I chose to pay homage to my ancestors who were once painting the style under grandmother moon just as I am now.
