Amanda and fellow NAISU students organized the annual University of Maryland Powwow. The event’s objectives focused on bringing the community together, especially Indigenous communities, to honor veterans and elders while enjoying each other’s company
Student organizers gained hands-on experience by assisting with various aspects of the powwow’s execution. The organizers also hosted specials honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples, raising awareness about the crisis while encouraging community connection through the potato dance. The event also featured arts vendors selling Native American crafts, which served as an important cultural connection for attendees.
Ultimately, the event provided opportunities to educate the public, foster intertribal connections, and preserve traditions.
