Wabenaki & Wendat

Age: 16

Lilie-Rose (Wabenaki & Wendat) is a young artist who focuses on bringing Indigenous perspectives to the forefront of narratives Indigenous people have been removed from. Their artworks feature intersectional, complex, and impactful themes rooted in historical research and childhood memories of picking sweetgrass. They also are working on Indigenous language revitalization and archival projects which, hopefully, will make a larger impact on Indigenous communities.

Driving on dirt roads, little hands clicked the skip button through credits to the opening scene, which I had watched a million times. The actor beating his deerskin drum reminded me of my dad and I singing traditional songs. These road trips would lead me to fishing the trout my ancestors had been catching for generations. Or I would find myself at a community event, watching my uncles play music on hand drums. That is what is truly sacred to me, the traditional music and practices that I grew up with, despite the efforts of colonization to eradicate them.
