The Beginner Basket Weaving Workshop, led by Lily Burland, was designed with the goal that each attendee would leave with their own handmade basket. The target audience included Indigenous students, community members and allies.
Approximately 15 individuals participated in the workshop, with several additional community members assisting with setup and cleanup, while also engaging informally in the gathering. The workshop brought together students and community members from diverse backgrounds, age groups and Tribal affiliations to learn the craft of basket weaving.
Throughout the event, participants supported one another, formed new friendships and bonded over the shared learning experience. The gathering also created space for meaningful conversations, including discussions about academic challenges, issues impacting their communities and aspirations for the future.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed interest in participating in future workshops and shared a sense of pride and accomplishment in learning a new craft.
