My painting represents my goal of becoming more in touch with my culture, both personally and professionally. I live in Maryland, while my tribe, the Choctaw Nation, resides in Oklahoma. I plan to move there to attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University and be closer to my community. Most of what I know about my tribe comes from newspapers, which only share glimpses of real stories. Recently, I attended my first powwow, and hearing the chants of my people inspired me deeply. Their songs told stories of resilience and beauty. My painting captures that rhythm, emotion and cultural connection.
