My mother is an Afro-Indigenous woman who grew up in Belize, but raised me in the U.S. This meant that she took on the formidable task of being my primary bridge to my ancestors and culture. My mother taught me to be proud of my Indigenous identity and not just when it was convenient. This piece depicts her teaching me about my culture, which is all I want for my future children.
