Tatiwyat Buck

2025 Brave Heart Fellow

Wanapum, Yakama & Colville

Seattle, WA

Tatiwyat comes from the Wanapum, Yakama and Colville tribes. She grew up in Priest Rapids Village – raised in a longhouse and immersed in religion, faith and culture – listening to the teachings and stories of her elders. She feels lucky to have grown up this way, and wants to ensure more young people have the same opportunity. Her desire to make sure ‘luck’ isn’t the only factor allowing others to grow up this way drives her to fight for Native rights.

About Tatiwyat’s Project

During her time as a 2025 Brave Heart Fellow, Tatiwyat set out to document the cultural importance of First Foods through storytelling and interviews. As part of her work, she attended First Foods feasts at Priest Rapids, Nespelem and Pendleton—deepening her understanding of changing growing patterns, environmental threats and the vital role Elders play in safeguarding traditional knowledge.

Through intentional outreach and relationship-building, Tatiwyat is preparing to interview community leaders for an archival series at the Wanapum Heritage Center. Her ultimate goal is to preserve First Foods teachings and inspire youth to take part in protecting them.
