My artwork features a picture of two long braids. This relates to my identity because family and community connections are a major part of my culture. Braids symbolize that to me because they connect me to my family and friends. My grandma braids my mother’s hair, my mother braids my hair, I braid my friend’s hair, and the line keeps going. My grandma taught me that our hair carries our thoughts, so I painted the braids in fire colors: various shades of red, orange, and yellow because my Yuchi name means ‘she carries fire’.
