Dear Native Youth,
We are all here today because of the resilience of our ancestors, and the strength of our communities. There is no diminishing the fact, however, that we are living through uncertain times. This season is too often marked by grief, fear and collective unease.
When the world around you feels most heavy, just know that your feelings are valid, and that you are not alone. But also remember that our greatest power comes from one another – from our teachings, from our relatives, from our Indigenous identities. CNAY stands in solidarity with Native communities across Indian Country and beyond in the face of turmoil and oppression.
As always, we uplift you – Native youth – as the inherent leaders you are. You all have the ability to take action to support those around you and to help ensure safety for your community, your neighbors, your relatives and yourselves. Most importantly, learn what your rights are. If you don’t know your rights, you can’t know when they are being violated. The Native American Rights Fund, among other organizations, has clear and concise resources available to help you navigate difficult situations.
Become familiar with this information. Share it with your networks. Look to your Tribal leaders for their guidance. Carry your Tribal ID with you at all times, if you have one. Carry your phone and be ready to use it. Memorize important numbers. Finally, remember your right to sovereignty and self-determination. The inherent authority of Tribal Nations to govern themselves predates the United States and serves as the bedrock of all federal Indian law and policy.
If you are feeling overwhelmed – lost, stressed out, hopeless – please do not hesitate to reach out for help. Connect with your community. Take breaks from social media and the news. Do things that bring you joy. Hope does not mean ignoring reality, it means holding grief and possibility at the same time. Protect your energy and your nervous system, and remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup.
With love and support,
Tracy Goodluck & Team CNAY
