On July 12-13, 2025, the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) team traveled to the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin for the first ever Oneida Youth Summit. Our Executive Director Tracy Goodluck joined programs staff – Tahnee and Neely – to lead a Democracy is Indigenous training to the 30 youth in attendance. The session prompted the youth to think about what “Democracy is Indigenous” means to them, while focusing on how they can engage their community and promote civic engagement. They were enthusiastic to share their experiences and thoughts about how the Oneida Nation could encourage Native youth participation in Tribal politics.
We were honored to spend the weekend in community with our Oneida relatives, helping out where needed, engaging with youth during their other activities, participating in social dances and songs, and to have the privilege of watching a traditional lacrosse game.
We are grateful for the experiences and hospitality that the Oneida Nation showed us, and are impressed by their efforts to uplift their future leaders. CNAY looks forward to many more years of partnership. Yaw^ko!
