This Gen-I Native Opportunities Weekly (NOW) message shares information about the Fertile Ground Leadership Institute! 

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) and American Heart Association (AHA) are now accepting applications for the Fertile Ground Leadership Institute. Fertile Ground is a leadership development opportunity in which participants explore food sovereignty, health, and dietary wellness in Indian Country, using traditional Indigenous knowledge.

SMSC and AHA will fully fund 50 Native leaders to participate in the Institute. Participants will be separated into two cohorts of 25, with one cohort meeting in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, June 11-13, and the other cohort meeting in Seattle, August 7-9. Roundtrip airfare, accommodations, meals, and the cost of the training will be fully covered for each admitted participant.

Eligibility: Applicants must be:

  • Native American;
  • At least 18 years old;
  • From a tribal, community or nonprofit setting; and
  • Available to participate in the entire training, June 11-13 or August 7-9.
