CNAY Partners with Brown University to Provide Summer Program Scholarship
This scholarship is offered by CNAY through a new partnership with Brown University’s Pre-College Programs in Providence, Rhode Island. The Center for Native American Youth will award a full-tuition, residential scholarship for a Native student to attend one of Brown University’s on-campus pre-college programs during summer 2018.
All application materials must be received by CNAY by 11:59 PM Pacific Time on Sunday, April 15, 2018. CNAY will notify all applicants of their final application status within one week after the deadline.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Students first apply for the CNAY-Brown Summer Scholarship through the online forms linked below.
- CNAY selects one scholarship recipient and works with Brown University to reserve a summer program spot for that scholar.
- CNAY assists the scholarship recipient in confirming and completing their application through Brown University’s separate online process.
WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP INCLUDE?
The CNAY-Brown Summer Scholarship covers the cost of housing, tuition, meals, coursework materials and other required student services for the duration of the summer program. *Students are financially responsible for their own travel to and from the program, as well as spending money for incidentals, souvenirs, recreational activities, class supplies (pens, paper, etc.) and textbooks where applicable.
*CNAY recommends setting aside $75-100 per week to cover expenses such as laundry, personal items, and transportation and fees for optional recreational activities around the city. We suggest contacting your tribal nation, school and other local organizations to identify funding to cover travel and spending money. WHICH PROGRAMS ARE COVERED BY THIS SCHOLARSHIP?
Scholarship applicants may apply to attend one of the following summer programs. The CNAY-Brown Summer Scholarship will be applied to the program of the scholar’s choice. Note that selection of a particular course does not guarantee enrollment in that course. Course enrollment is determined on a rolling basis.
Summer@Brown: Choose 1 Class from Multiple 1- to 4-Week Sessions
Summer@Brown offers non-credit courses designed for students to experience college-level academics on an Ivy League campus. Reflecting Brown’s broad liberal arts curriculum, Summer@Brown features nearly 200 courses, designed and taught at the level of first-year college courses, requiring 3 hours of class per day with 2-3 hours of homework, and ranging in length from one to four weeks. Pre-Baccalaureate Program: Seven-Week Session: June 26 – August 11, 2017 (2 Classes)
Brown’s Pre-Baccalaureate Program is a highly selective program designed to engage college-ready high school students in college-level learning. In this seven-week summer session of compressed first-year level curriculum, you will take 1-2 classes alongside Brown undergraduates, earn college credit, and experience the rigors and deep satisfaction of Ivy League learning 2-3 days per week. Brown Leadership Institute: Choose 1 Class from Multiple Two-Week Residential Sessions
June 26 – July 7, 2017
July 10 – July 21, 2017
July 24 – August 4, 2017
This unique program combines the development of socially responsible leadership with focused study on academic topics such as health, global development, social entrepreneurship, conflict resolution, and environmental justice. Students integrate their learning through course work, workshops on leadership styles, public speaking, active listening, and the development of an Action Plan project related to their school or home community. For students completing grades 9-12 by June 2017, with a minimum age of 15 by the start of the program.
Brown Environmental Leadership Lab (BELL) Rhode Island: Choose 1 Class from Multiple Two-Week Residential Sessions
June 25 – July 7, 2017
July 9 – 21, 2017
July 23 – August 4, 2017
BELL students live and learn on location, and address the challenges of global and local environmental issues in a hands-on learning environment. Field research, discussions, site visits, and debates are a few of the ways students learn together and develop socially responsible leadership skills they can apply to create change in their home communities. For students completing grades 9-12 by June 2017, with a minimum age of 15 by the start of the program.
Explore topics of study. *NOTE: BELL Alaska is not included in this scholarship.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
*Applicants for the CNAY-Brown Summer Scholarship must meet all of the following criteria:
- Currently enrolled in high school grades 9-12 or rising/recently graduated high school seniors for Pre-Bacc program
- Identify as American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian and provide proof of enrollment or descendency
- At least 15 years old by the start of the program
*CNAY cannot make exceptions to eligibility requirements.
HOW TO APPLY:
A complete application includes all of the following materials, which must be received by CNAY by 11:59 PT on Sunday, April 16, 2017.
- CNAY-Brown Summer Scholarship Application (includes essay, high school transcript and proof of tribal enrollment or descendency)
- Recommendation Form #1 (submitted online by recommender). This form should be submitted by a guidance counselor, principal, or headmaster commenting on the student’s intellectual ability, level of maturity, and motivation for participating in the Brown Pre-College Summer Program of the applicant’s choice.
- Recommendation Form #2 (submitted online by recommender). This form must be submitted by an instructor who teaches in a field closely related to the program and course the applicant hopes to attend at Brown University. The recommender’s comments should describe the student’s knowledge of that field, overall intellectual curiosity, and assess the student’s qualification to engage in concentrated study. This recommendation should speak to the applicant’s potential to benefit from the experience at Brown.
