YUP’IK, DENA’INA ATHABASCAN, & ALEUT
AGE: 24
Camai (hello in Yup’ik), My Yup’ik name is Angilaq, my English name is Esther Robertson. I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. My mother is Yup’ik from the Native village of New Stuyahok, Alaska. My father Yup’ik, Dena’ina Athabascan, and Aleut and is from Homer, Alaska. I am a contemporary Native artist. I paint with acrylics and water color. My artwork proudly portrays my love of my culture and beautiful home of Alaska. Quyana (thank you).
This is a water color painting of my older brother, David, at the age of 23, after he got his first asvaq (seal) for subsistence hunting. This is significant because my parent’s are passing down traditional Native values to me and my siblings so we may continue to pass these values on the the up coming generations. Being involved in your culture is so important, it helps us to be proud of who we are and where we come from. Quyana (thank you) for taking the time to consider my art.
