YUROK PYRAMID LAKE PAIUTE
AGE: 23
Lena Wright is an interdisciplinary Yurok artist from the Pyramid Lake reservation in Nevada. Her work aims to move past what main stream society would consider to be “Native American”, often depicting the duality of native people in both the celebration of culture and acknowledging the trauma of colonialism. Lena will be pursuing a Master’s in Fine Art at the San Francisco Art Institute this upcoming fall.
Being Generation Indigenous is about revitalizing and making up for the lost history of native people. With colonialism and trauma throughout our communities, it is very much up to the youth and my generation to restore that lost history. This piece honors those youth. It honors the dreams and aspirations of the future generation that will carry on the culture and fight for change. It honors those currently fighting through education and actions, and who have already started to make the change necessary for native people on a community and national level.
