Quincy Casey

Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians

Age: 24

Chee’la Quincy waa ‘vm-nvsh-shi. Hello, Quincy is the name that I am called! I am a citizen of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and my ancestors come from the Lower Rogue River in Southern Oregon. I am a multimedia artist/architectural designer and more recently have been creating work that often incorporates both physical works and digital painting. I have a deep passion for basketry, plank house architecture and illustration and one day wish to publish a comic series shining a light on my people and our culture.

This piece is my portrayal of the moon and its vast impact on different aspects of life. The moon for my people has been used interchangeably with time. The faded rings around the moon represent the 13 lunar months and its different phases. Salmon is among the most significant beings for my people and their seaward migration is thought to be restricted to nighttime hours. Other activities such as fishing, oystering and foraging are all impacted by the tides. The moon is the front of a drum I made cut out and overlayed onto my digital painting.
