Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe

Age: 15

My name is Sarah, I am 15 and currently a sophomore. I’ve grown up in South Dakota my whole life, occasionally only living in Illinois for a few months per year. I am a art fellow at the Cheyenne River Youth Project where I am learning to become a professional tattoo artist. I have been interested in many forms of art and have been practicing for a few years. I like to read and write while also playing some video games in my spare time.

People have different perspectives on what they call home and community, but I like to think my home and community is my place in my heritage and my culture. In my opinion, drawing a self portrait can be difficult. We may see all the “imperfections” and try to erase and make them more “perfect.” Our faces come from bur relatives and heritage, to embrace looks and heritage can be to honor our relatives that have given us such a unique gift. I like to think that a self portrait is a way to show yourself and your culture.
