Xeneca LeClair

Otoe-Missouria, Pueblo Laguna, Ponca

Age: 23

Aha/Hello, my name is Xeneca LeClair, a cinematic arts and technology student in my senior year at IAIA. I make creations of art and films to spread awareness of issues that affect today’s Indigenous communities – breaking molds of being relics of yesterday and be recognized for our voices in songs, prayers and stories. I do my best for my tribe of the Otoe-Missouria people and learn to help provide our customs to the world through beauty in my art.

I think back to my creation story that follows my tribe’s clan animals and connect to old floral designs our families have made in the past. I’d like to think that I’m modernizing my people’s art in appliqué on our regalia we dance in. This past year, I was able to experience walking where my people roamed. I thought of the clan animals when I took each step, especially my clan being Buffalo. So far, I hope to continue being a good Otoe-Missouria woman among the creative field.
